Hurricane Helene: City of Greensboro prepares for impact, officials say

ARRIVING WARNINGS FOR THE REGION HAVE ALSO ALREADY BEEN ISSUED. WE HAVE TEAM COVERAGE FOR YOU FIRST AT 5:00. AS WE ALSO TRACK THE TROPICS. WE WILL GET TO WXII 12. SARAH SOWERS IN JUST A MOMENT, BUT WE WANT TO START WITH CHIEF METEOROLOGIST LANIE POPE LANEY. ARE WE EXPECTING ANY RAIN FROM THIS SYSTEM TONIGHT? NO, WE ARE NOT GOING TO GET RAIN DIRECTLY FROM HELENE TONIGHT. WE ARE GETTING RAIN, THOUGH. ALONG THAT SAME FRONTAL BOUNDARY WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT ALL WEEK LONG. AND THAT MAKES FOR A WEATHER IMPACT, ESPECIALLY FOR OUR WESTERNMOST COMMUNITIES. MOUNTAINS AND FOOTHILLS, ROUNDS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH THE HEAVIEST IN THOSE WESTERN COMMUNITIES PREPARE FOR FLASH FLOODING. THERE’S ALSO THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ISOLATED, SEVERE STORMS WITH WIND, HAIL, AND EVEN A THREAT THAT WE COULD HAVE ISOLATED TORNADOES. OUR BIGGEST CONCERN, THOUGH, IS FLOODING. FOR TONIGHT, AND THAT REMAINS THE BIGGEST CONCERN AS HALLOWEEN APPROACHES AS WELL. WE’VE GOT A FLOOD WATCH UP THROUGH AT LEAST 8:00 TOMORROW. THIS WILL LIKELY BE EXTENDED AND COULD BE EXPANDED EAST AS HALLOWEEN APPROACHES, AND WE ENTER THAT FRIDAY WINDOW. YOU LOOK AT FIRST WARNING RADAR. RIGHT NOW WE’RE DRY FOR THE MOST PART ACROSS MUCH OF OUR AREA. WE’RE JUST STARTING TO GET SOME OF THOSE SHOWERS AND STORMS KIND OF TRAINING THEIR WAY UP AGAINST THE MOUNTAINS. SO I DO THINK THIS IS GOING TO KIND OF BE NONSTOP WAVES OF RAIN AS WE GO INTO THE NIGHTTIME HOURS. THAT’S WHY WE’VE GOT THE FLOOD. WATCH OUT. YOU SEE THAT FRONTAL BOUNDARY GETTING REAL CLOSE TO AT LEAST THE NORTH CAROLINA TENNESSEE BORDER. THE EXCESSIVE RAINFALL FORECAST FOR TODAY IS MAINLY FOCUSED IN THAT AREA. AND THAT INCLUDES OUR WESTERNMOST COMMUNITIES. THERE’S ALSO A RISK FOR THOSE ISOLATED, SEVERE STORMS FROM THAT TOO. SO BETWEEN NOW AND MIDNIGHT, YOU CAN SEE THE VERY HEAVY RAINS THAT ARE EXPECTED IN PLACES LIKE WILKESBORO, MOUNT AIRY, ALSO UP TOWARDS SPARTA. EVEN PARTS OF YADKIN COUNTY. MOST OF THIS WILL REMAIN WEST OF THE TRIAD THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT. NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT HURRICANE HELENE. NOW HAS 85 MILE PER HOUR WINDS, AND THAT STORM IS FORECAST NOW TO BECOME A CATEGORY FOUR STORM. THAT BY TOMORROW AFTERNOON, AS IT APPROACHES THE PANHANDLE OF FLORIDA, THEN WORKS ITS WAY TO THE NORTH AND TO THE WEST. WE’LL HAV
